HAMILTON — The Miami University Hamilton women’s basketball team is moving along just fine, taking baby steps into the 2007-08 season.
If it were up to third-year coach Chris Settle, he’d rather have it that way.
“I think we’ll be a lot better this year,” said Settle, whose Harriers finished 9-22 last season. “We’ll be all right. On paper we know who we have. We’ve been taking it one thing at a time with practices and practice games.”
MUH features a three-headed spear in guards Kim Jenkins, Kristi Wooten and Bittany Penter.
While Jenkins and Penter, both sophomore guards, will be doing most of the ball handling for the Harriers, Wooten will do a lot of the scoring.
Wooten, a junior and former Badin High standout, averaged 15 points a game for Miami-Hamilton last season.
“All three of those girls know what’s going on,” Settle said. “It’s going to be good stuff seeing them out there on the court.”
Maria Lorenz (junior), Megan Ellinghausen (freshman), Ronda Henderson (sophomore), Gwen Bohman (junior) and Stephanie Gambrell (freshman) are battling it out for the remaining starting positions.
“I’m trying to decide on a lot of things still,” Settle said. “You don’t really know until you get out there and do the real thing.”
Seeing some playing time off the bench for the Harriers are freshmen Alyssa Ruhl, Zeljka Veljovic, Sable Gray and Danielle Faulkner.
“Every game is going to be tough,” Settle said. “There aren’t going to be teams you’ll just walk over against.”
The Harriers kick off the season tonight at Cincinnati State Technical Community College at 5 p.m.
“We’ll be all right,” Settle said. “It’s been a catch 22 all preseason because of the girls’ schedules. But we’ve gotten in some good practices, and we’ll see where that takes us.”
